The Simple Ingredients
You’ll need chicken drumsticks and a handful of simple ingredients to make the homemade teriyaki sauce. Here’s what you need:
If you’re short on ingredients, there are a few substitutions you can make for this recipe. First, if you’re out of brown sugar you can use honey instead. Use the same amount and you’ll be set.
If you don’t have rice vinegar, you can use apple cider vinegar or even white vinegar in its place. The acidity helps balance out the salty and sweet.
If you don’t have fresh garlic, you can use garlic powder in a pinch. About 1/4 teaspoon should do it.
How to Make Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken Drumsticks
Pour the sauce over the chicken, set the slow cooker to low and walk away for 4 hours.
You can go ahead and enjoy them at this point but the sauce is pretty thin. I like to thicken it with a cornstarch slurry so it becomes more of a glaze.
Simply whisk together cornstarch and water and stir it into the sauce. This will thicken it and you’re good to go. Drizzle the thickened sauce over the drumsticks. It’s great over white rice and broccoli as well.

Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken Drumsticks
- Slow Cooker
- 3 lbs. chicken drumsticks (about 8)
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp. rice vinegar
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
- 2 1/2 Tbsp. cornstarch
- 1/4 cup water
- Place chicken drumsticks in slow cooker. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, ground ginger and black pepper. Pour over the chicken and toss to coat. Cook on low for 4 hours.
- To thicken the sauce: whisk together cornstarch and water. Stir into slow cooker. Allow to cook and thicken for 5 minutes. Serve.
