I may have created this recipe because I needed an excuse to eat rice for breakfast. I don’t know, just saying.

This recipe is a delicious mash-up of the traditional fried rice and our favorite breakfast foods. Get ready, because it’s going to be good.

Between the loads of eggs and bacon throughout it, I think it’s totally acceptable for breakfast.

I mean, I’ve been known to eat dinner leftovers for breakfast so I guess I’m not an authority here but whatever. If you dig savory, you’ll love this one.

How to Make Breakfast Fried Rice

Start out by gathering all your ingredients. Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • Cold cooked sushi (or plain white) rice
  • Thick cut bacon (5 slices to be exact)
  • Eggs
  • Black pepper
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Sesame seeds

Start by heating a large skillet over medium-high heat. While it’s warming up, dice the bacon into small pieces.

Add the diced bacon to the hot skillet and cook until it’s super crispy. Remove the bacon and all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon grease from the skillet.

Now it’s time to scramble the eggs in the bacon grease. You. Are. Welcome. Stir in the pepper while you’re at it.

Add the rice to the skillet and toss until the eggs are well distributed. Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds and let it cook for a minute. Stir again and let it cook another minute.

Remove the rice from the heat, stir in the bacon and serve. It seriously couldn’t get easier. Add a drizzle of hot sauce if that’s your thing or enjoy it as is.

The Best Rice for Breakfast Fried Rice

It’s really important that the rice you are using to make your fried rice is cold. That means leftover rice from a meal earlier in the week is perfect. Yay for recreating leftovers.

Make extra the next time you have rice, cook it the night before you plan on making this dish or keep a stash frozen for when the craving strikes.

My favorite type of rice to use in this recipe is sushi rice. It’s very easy to find at the grocery store (I’ve seen it at my favorite local store and Wal-Mart). You can grab sushi rice on good ‘ole Amazon too.

It’s a little fluffier, stickier and chewier than regular white rice and seems to hold up better when it’s stir-fried. All that being said, you can definitely use standard white rice in this recipe too.

Simple Substitutions

If you want to make this heartier or don’t like bacon (how dare you) you can use breakfast sausage. Just replace the bacon step in the recipe and cook the sausage then instead. Or in addition to.

Nobody’s going to protest double pig.
