Tasty Turkey

You all know that I love adding turkey to our weekly meal planning. Whether it’s grilled, ground or served for breakfast, it’s one of my favorite proteins.

I often use it in place of ground beef because it takes on flavor so well, is low in fat and is packed with vitamins.

The ground turkey in this recipe soaks up the tomato sauce and taco seasoning bringing ALL the flavor. It’s just so good.

And did you know that it’s been illegal to add steroids or hormones to turkey since the 1950s?! What’s not to love?

Ingredients for Taco Turkey Sloppy Joes

  • Olive oil: This helps brown the turkey before making the sauce.
  • Onion: Adds tons of flavor to the sloppy joes. I minced mine super fine to bring the flavor but sneak them by the kids.
  • Garlic: Again, garlic adds lots of flavor to the sauce.
  • Ground turkey: I prefer using 90/10 ground turkey for this recipe just to add a little fat (and flavor). That said, you can use 93/7 or 99/1 if you prefer.
  • Tomato sauce: This is what makes them sloppy. You’ll only need an 8 ounce can.
  • Taco seasoning mix: I always prefer to use my homemade taco seasoning mix. You can control the spice level and amount of certain ingredients when you make it yourself. If you want to use a premixed package that’s just fine too.
  • Hamburger buns: To complete the sloppy joes. Use your favorite.
  • Your favorite taco toppings: Whatever you like on your tacos would be delicious on these taco turkey sloppy joes. Sour cream, shredded lettuce, guacamole, shredded cheese, chopped tomatoes, salsa. This list goes on and on.

How to Make Taco Turkey Sloppy Joes

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the olive oil then the onions. Saute them until softened, about 3 minutes. Then add the garlic and saute another minute.

Crumble in the ground turkey and cook until no longer pink. Stir in the tomato sauce, water and taco seasoning mix.

Bring the sloppy joe mixture to a light simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes.

Serve on hamburger buns and top with your favorite taco toppings.

The Perfect Weeknight Dinner

These turkey sloppy joes have so many great perks. First, they only take 30 minutes from start to finish. I don’t know about you but that’s what I need for weeknight meals.

As you read above, these are so easy to make. Browning turkey, mixing in a few ingredients and simmering for 10 minutes is definitely a 5 star situation on the preparation scale.

Everyone can make their own sloppy joe and choose their favorite toppings. If you set them out like a taco bar, it makes for an especially fun family meal.

It’s also a great option to get your kids in the kitchen. I have a little helper that doesn’t leave my side in the kitchen and she loved assisting with these.

We always make sure to wash our hands and any surfaces we may have touched after handling the raw turkey.
