Is it too soon for Valentine’s talk? Are you a fan of Valentine’s Day or are you on the Hallmark holiday bandwagon? I’ve never been a big fan of this particular holiday, I’m just not a big lovey-dovey romantic type of person.

But with kids in the picture it’s fun to have heart shaped pancakes or pizza and dessert with red and pink heart sprinkles. My kids are the “any reason for dessert” type so they jumped on the Valentine’s bandwagon hard. So I go out and buy the heart sprinkles and pink and red M&M’s because it makes them happy which makes me happy which makes retailers happy.

I have a couple sweet and one savory recipe to share in the coming weeks that I think you are going to love. And today I’m starting with a sweet treat that is actually good for you (disclaimer: the remaining Valentine’s recipes will not be buuut, who wants to make all good choices on the day of love?).

This Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie is based off the ever popular treat but in a healthy form. This way, you can start your day off with a healthy, energy filled breakfast so you don’t have to feel so bad when you have steak and wine and all the chocolates later.

The smoothie starts with sweet, dark cherries, cocoa powder and the tiniest amount of almond extract to create the flavor profile then it’s sweetened with honey (or pure maple syrup if you are in a pinch) and thinned out with almond milk, or whatever milk you keep in your house.

I always add chia seeds to my smoothies for some added fiber and protein. You can’t taste them and they blend right up so they are undetectable if you are worried about picky eaters discovering them. Then it all gets blended until smooth.

You guys, this smoothie is so rich and creamy. Since it’s only sweetened with honey the cocoa flavor really shines through.

I’m keeping this one in my back pocket to make when my chocoholic kids are begging for candy. Which is every single day. So I guess I should stock up on cherries.
